Bomdila, Mar 5: Deputy Commissioner of West Kameng, Akriti Sagar inaugurated The Reading Nest – a dedicated space for knowledge and learning at the District Library, Bomdila, in the presence of various Heads of Departments, students, members of the NGO Doctors For You, and the general public.
While inaugurating The Reading Nest, Sagar urged students to make the most of this state-of-the-art learning facility, which offers internet access, books on competitive exams, fiction, comics, and a diverse range of subjects and themes. She acknowledged the shift in learning trends with the advent of the internet but emphasised that books remain one of the most reliable and convenient sources of knowledge. She also lauded District Library & Information Officer (DL&IO) Lobom Tamin and his team for their dedication in transforming the limited reading space into a well-equipped learning hub.
Welcoming the attendees, Tamin shared insights into the journey of renovating the District Library, Bomdila. He highlighted that The Reading Nest is designed to provide a conducive environment for readers, where they can access a variety of books, engage deeply with them, and utilise the internet for learning purposes.
Speaking on the importance of reading habits, Tamin pointed out that despite the internet’s convenience, not all information available online is accurate, whereas books generally offer more reliable knowledge. He stressed that excessive mobile phone usage negatively impacts concentration, as users are often distracted by notifications and multiple screens at once, whereas reading a book requires deep focus and enhances concentration.
He also noted that reading improves vocabulary, comprehension skills, and helps reduce stress.
Tamin further cited studies indicating that students with strong reading habits tend to perform better academically.
He also appealed to parents to actively promote reading culture at home, encouraging their children to develop a love for books.
As part of the initiative, the District Library has launched a month-long awareness campaign under the theme “Read and Lead.” To promote reading habits, a free membership drive will be conducted throughout the month, and various competitions, including reading and storytelling, will be held at the end of the month. Additionally, there are plans to establish a Reading Club in Bomdila Township, and interested individuals will be invited to join once it is formed.
Expressing gratitude, DL&IO Tamin thanked DC Akriti Sagarand DFY for their support in making The Reading Nest a reality.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Doctors For You (DFY), which funded the project under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. With this initiative, the District Library, Bomdila, takes a significant step towards reviving reading habits and fostering a culture of knowledge and learning among the community. DIPRO
