ITANAGAR, Apr 4: The All Arunachal Pradesh Priests’ Welfare Association (AAPPWA) called for immediate framing of rules and implementation of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978, asserting that the law is vital for preserving the indigenous spirit and cultural identity of the state.
Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, AAPPWA President Tatung Tagar stated that the Act poses no harm to the religious sentiments or customs of the people. Instead, he stressed, it acts as a safeguard for all belief systems and should be seen as a step towards ensuring religious harmony.
Adding to the discussion, AAPPWA General Secretary Takam Tami recalled that the legislation was introduced by former Chief Minister PK Thungon during the Janata Party regime, with the primary aim of protecting the indigenous faiths, traditions, and customs of Arunachal’s 26 major tribes and over 100 sub-tribes. “There are certain religious group who are against implementation of this Act, but as an indigenous faith believers we urge the state government to immediately implement the rule for the preservation of our identity,” he said.
The Association further urged citizens to avoid unnecessary confrontations over the issue and to work together in maintaining the state’s peace and unity.
