ITANAGAR, Apr 6: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has responded to the recent discussions surrounding the Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) issue in Lekang, stating that the matter requires a careful and sensitive approach.
Speaking to the media, CM Khandu acknowledged the positive gesture made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling it a welcome step from a humanitarian perspective. He noted that efforts were made to resolve the issue back in 2019, but misunderstandings at the time had led to a law and order situation.
"Arunachal Pradesh is a 100 percent tribal state, and any decision on such sensitive matters must be taken after thorough consultation with the people," CM Khandu emphasised. He added that he would soon be meeting with CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, where the PRC issue will certainly be discussed.
The Chief Minister also assured that any step forward will only be taken after proper dialogue with the leaders and stakeholders of the state and specially with the people from Eastern Arunachal.
"We are committed to ensuring that the sentiments and rights of our indigenous communities are respected," he said.
Earlier this March, in a significant development,  the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the Assam Cabinet has approved the issuance of Permanent Resident Certificates (PRCs) for the Moran community residing in Arunachal Pradesh.
This decision aims to provide equal rights and opportunities to the Moran people living in Arunachal Pradesh, aligning their benefits with those enjoyed by residents of Assam. The move was initially announced by Sarma during the Moran Mahotsav in Makum, Tinsukia district, on January 28, 2024, where he stated that the Assam government would grant PRCs to Moran community members in Arunachal Pradesh specially in Lekang constituency and some other pockets of the Namsai and Changlang district.
