KHARSANG, Feb 17: Scores of villagers from Lungtom-I, Lungtom-II, Injan-I, Injan-II, and Panchun organised a peace rally on Monday against the proposed auction of the West Block and East Block of Namchik-Namphuk coal mine in Kharsang Circle.
The protest, which began at Moh Mol Ground, culminated at the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) office in Kharsang, where a memorandum was submitted to the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Miao.
The villagers fear that the auction of the coal blocks will lead to severe displacement and environmental destruction. According to protestors, more than 100 hectares of land in Lungtom-I and II and approximately 500 hectares in Injan-I, II, and Panchun will be affected if the auction proceeds.
Speaking to the media, the villagers emphasized that their livelihoods, homes, and agricultural lands are at stake. They urged the state government to reconsider the auction and prioritise the rights of indigenous communities over commercial mining interests.
