PHINBIRO/CHANGLANG Feb 16: A resident of Phinbiro-II village under Lyngok Circle, Lemkam Mossang, was allegedly beaten by Assam Forest personnel while returning from Tirap Gate Market, Assam, on Saturday afternoon.
According to reports, the incident occurred between Tipong and Phinbiro-II at a location known as "3 No." around 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Mossang, while passing through the area, noticed a group of forest officers, including a Range Officer, planting trees. He continued toward his village without any confrontation.
However, about 100 meters ahead, near the hillside, he encountered two forest personnel coming from the Phinbiro-II side, who ordered him to return to where the plantation was being carried out. When he refused, the personnel allegedly snatched his phone and moved toward Tipong.
Mossang followed them and reached "3 No.", where the Range Officer seized his vegetable bag. When he demanded its return, two forest personnel allegedly began beating him and threw his bag by the roadside. Fearing for his safety, Mossang managed to escape and alerted villagers.
Upon hearing of the assault, a group of villagers rushed to the site and confronted the Assam Forest personnel. A heated argument ensued, during which the forest officers allegedly threatened to open fire and forcibly seized villagers' mobile phones, deleting recorded data.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, raising concerns over repeated cross-border tensions between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Authorities from both states are yet to respond to the matter, but villagers are demanding strict action against the forest personnel involved in the assault.
