ITANAGAR, Mar 2: In a significant step towards inclusivity and equal rights, the Arunachal Pradesh Queer Station (AP Queer Station) met with Minister for Social Justice & Tribal Affairs, Kento Jini, to present a proposal aimed at improving the well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community in the state.
The delegation discussed various initiatives, including legal advocacy, awareness programs, healthcare access, and infrastructure improvements to create a more inclusive society.
Founder AP Queer Station Sawang Wangcha stated that one of the key focuses of the proposal was the implementation of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. The organization highlighted the need for workshops in collaboration with government departments to streamline legal and administrative processes for transgender individuals. Additionally, the proposal called for the establishment of dedicated help desks within government offices to assist transgender persons with inquiries and official procedures.
To promote awareness and understanding, AP Queer Station emphasized the importance of sensitization programs in schools, colleges, and government institutions across Arunachal Pradesh. The goal is to educate the public and foster a culture of acceptance and respect for gender and sexual minorities, added Wangcha.
He further informed that, another crucial aspect of the proposal was access to free hormone therapy for transgender individuals. The organization urged the government to facilitate medical support, recognizing the financial and social challenges that many transgender individuals face in accessing gender-affirming healthcare.
The proposal also included plans for an annual queer festival, similar to Soliloquy, featuring exhibitions, dance performances, art showcases, and creative programs. Scheduled for June, in celebration of Pride Month, the event aims to provide a platform for self-expression, visibility, and community engagement.
AP Queer Station also raised concerns about transgender-friendly infrastructure in government offices and public institutions. They called for a review of existing facilities to ensure the availability of transgender-inclusive toilets, in line with the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules, 2020. The organization stressed the need for necessary action in case of non-compliance to improve accessibility and dignity for transgender individuals, stated Wangcha.
Minister Kento Jini expressed his appreciation for the discussions and assured that the government would review and consider the proposals put forward. He reiterated the state’s commitment to equality and inclusivity, acknowledging the importance of collaborative efforts to support and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community in Arunachal Pradesh.
