Jollang, May 3: A team of research scientists from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies, Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, successfully conducted a Gatekeeper Training program at Don Bosco School, Jollang. The training was an integral part of the research project titled "ICMR's Multistate Implementation Research on Suicide Risk Reduction and Improving Mental Well-being among School and College Students of Arunachal Pradesh." The principal investigator of the project is Dr. Tarun Mene, Assistant Professor, Arunachal Institute of tribal studies, RGU. It is a multistate project running in eight states of India. The main goals of the project is suicide risk reduction and improve mental well-being among school and college youth.
The comprehensive training program was led by three experienced project research scientists from the ICMR AITS team. Over 40 teachers of the school participated in the training, showcasing a diverse range of expertise and interests. As part of the research module, the Gatekeeper Training primarily focused on building capacities for early identification of suicidal risks and providing psychosocial support to students in need.
Gatekeeper Training is specifically designed to enable non-specialists to identify and respond effectively to individuals at risk of suicidal behavior. By equipping teachers and other community members with the necessary skills and knowledge, the training aims to facilitate timely interventions and support services for those struggling with mental health issues.
The program was conducted in an interactive and engaging manner, with all participants actively contributing to the discussions and activities. The training's success marks the beginning of the implementation phase 1 of the research project, which plans to extend its reach to around 60 institutions in the state.
Through this initiative, the research team aims to make a significant impact on reducing suicide risk and improving mental well-being among youth in Arunachal Pradesh. By fostering a supportive environment and promoting early interventions, the project seeks to contribute to the overall well-being and development of the state's youth. 
The ICMR, AITS team at Rajiv Gandhi University is committed to ensuring the project's success and looks forward to collaborating with educational institutions and stakeholders to achieve its objectives.
