LONGDING, May 5: In a pioneering conservation effort, the Department of Fisheries, Longding District conducted its first-ever river ranching program at Tewai and Taru Rivers in Ranglua area of Kanubari. The ecological initiative was graced by Gabriel D. Wangsu, Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Fisheries, Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs and Food & Civil Supply.
The program saw the release of 90,000 fingerlings, sourced from Lakhimpur, Assam, into the two rivers after proper conditioning. The introduced fish stock comprised six different species: Rohu, Katla, Mirga, Common Carp, Bighead and Grass Carp. Officials confirmed this marks the first such initiative in Longding district's history.
Addressing the gathered villagers, Minister Wangsu emphasized the critical importance of community participation in preserving river ecosystems. "Our rivers are lifelines that sustain not just aquatic life but entire communities. We must work collectively to protect these precious water bodies," he stated.
The Minister particularly highlighted concerns about destructive fishing practices that have threatened fish populations in local waterways. "We must avoid illegal fishing methods such as using explosives, bleaching agents, or electric generators, which destroy not just target fish but entire aquatic ecosystems and harm future fish stocks," Wangsu cautioned.
He further stressed the importance of maintaining ecological balance, noting that healthy river systems contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods for riverside communities.
The outreach program was attended by several key officials including the Superintendent of Police, Longding District; Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kanubari; District Fisheries Development Officer, Longding District; other departmental heads; and residents from surrounding villages.
Attendees expressed hope that this initiative would help replenish declining fish populations while raising awareness about sustainable fishing practices among local communities.
