Shillong, Apr 7: On the sidelines of the 175th anniversary celebrations of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the GSI and the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The MoU aims to foster collaboration in scientific studies related to geothermal energy and other geosciences in Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast region of India.
The signing ceremony took place at the GSI’s North Eastern Headquarters in Shillong today. Speaking on the occasion, GSI Director General Dr. Asit Saha described the MoU as a significant milestone that will help shape the geological, mineralogical, hydrological, and broader earth science landscape of the Arunachal Himalayan region. He congratulated the team from the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies and assured full support from the GSI, reaffirming its commitment to assist CESHS in promoting earth science development in the region. Since its inception in 1851, the GSI has played a foundational role in shaping the geological, mineralogical, hydrological, and broader earth science framework of the country.
Highlighting the GSI’s contributions, CESHS Director Tana Tage said, “When we look at the numbers, the sheer scale and depth of the work done by the GSI over nearly two centuries becomes evident. From mapping vast terrains and discovering key mineral resources to studying seismic activity and advancing geoscientific knowledge, the GSI has been a cornerstone of India’s scientific journey.” He acknowledged that while CESHS is a relatively young institution, its vision aligns closely with that of the GSI. Both GSI and CESHS have the potential to contribute meaningfully to the field of earth sciences, he said. The contributions of the GSI, he noted, go beyond academic and scientific spheres, offering immense national value by fueling development, informing policy, and enhancing our understanding of the very ground beneath our feet. It is with great pride that I speak today on behalf of a much newer institution—the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies, under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. Though young, our vision is to meaningfully contribute to the field of earth sciences, not just for our state, but for the entire nation, he added.
Highlighting the potential of the Arunachal Himalaya as a promising geothermal province, the CESHS Director emphasized the immense energy resources lying beneath the surface. He expressed hope that this collaboration with GSI will mark the beginning of a new chapter—blending traditional knowledge with scientific innovation, and bringing local insights and enthusiasm to the table.Let this MoUbe a symbol of our shared commitment to science, sustainability, and service, he concluded.
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Saibal Ghosh, Deputy Director General, GSI; Dr. Joyesh Bagchi, Additional Director General, GSI; all Deputy Director Generals from the Northeast region; and senior scientists of the GSI.
