ITANAGAR, Mar 8: Amid the ongoing debate surrounding the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978 (APFRA), Chief Minister Pema Khandu reassured that the Act will not impact any religion.
Speaking at the Inter-Tribe Festival of AAPSU at IG Park, CM Khandu emphasised that APFRA, 1978 remains neutral and does not target any faith. He stated that rules under the Act would be framed only after thorough discussions and consultations with representatives of all religions, as per the directive of the High Court.
“The Act had remained dormant for almost four decades, but following a PIL filed by certain individuals, the Court has directed the state government to frame rules within six months. However, I assure that the rule will not be against any religion. We live in a secular country, and religion is a personal choice. People should not be misled,” CM Khandu stated. He further urged the public especially the educated youths to spread awareness about the Act to those living in villages.
Earlier on March 6 last, the Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF) staged a mass protest against APFRA, fearing that the Act might be tabled in the ongoing Budget Session. The ACF warned that if the Act is not repealed, it will organise a mass referendum rally in the state capital as part of its next phase of protest.
