ITANAGAR, Feb 19:  The Women’s Wing of the Arunachal Democratic Party (ADP) has voiced strong opposition to the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA) 1978, stating that its enforcement is unnecessary and could disrupt social harmony in the state.
Speaking to the media at the Press Club on Wednesday, ADP Women’s Wing President Yayom Pangu emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh has long been a model of peaceful coexistence, with diverse ethnic and religious communities living in harmony. She further highlighted that the state, often referred to as a "Mini India" due to its rich cultural and linguistic diversity, has never witnessed communal tensions related to religious conversions.
The ADP pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh is one of eight states in India with an Anti-Conversion Law, yet it has remained free from conflicts arising from religious conversions. The party argued that, unlike other states where incidents like "religious riots " have been reported, Arunachal has remained peaceful, making strict enforcement of APFRA 1978 unnecessary, while terming the attempt as a divide-and-rule policy.
Urging the government to exercise caution, the ADP warned that any aggressive implementation of the law could fuel hatred, discrimination, and communal unrest. The party also appealed to all stakeholders to act responsibly and avoid actions that could ignite religious tensions.
Reaffirming its commitment to secularism and peaceful coexistence, the ADP Women’s Wing has urged the government to reconsider any move towards the strict enforcement of APFRA 1978, emphasizing the need to preserve the state’s long-standing tradition of harmony and unity.
