Guwahati, Jan 7: Gabriel D. Wangsu, Arunachal Pradesh’s Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, paid a visit to the ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig (ICAR-NRCP) in Guwahati to gain insights into its functioning and explore potential collaborations for implementation in his home state.
During his visit, Minister Wangsu interacted with the senior scientists of the institution. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of pig breeds available at the center and discussed his concern of ensuring that only high-quality breeds are introduced into the state.
Expressing concern about the potential entry of adulterated feed into Arunachal Pradesh, the Minister also stressed on the importance of feed verification and quality control. "Adulterating feed identification is crucial before distributing it to farmers," he stated. "Since we lack testing facilities like yours, procuring feeds from genuine sources is paramount. The feed must be fit for consumption and for quality production."
The Minister urged the institute to provide training programs for farmers of Arunachal Pradesh on modern pig farming techniques, including feed management and disease control. He also sought the institute's expertise in formulating a specific standard for healthy pig feed.
The board members of ICAR-NRCP presented a detailed overview of the institute's research activities, achievements and functioning. They discussed potential collaborations with the Arunachal Pradesh government, including the provision of piglets for the department. Minister Wangsu expressed interest in acquiring Rani breed piglets, a crossbreed of Hampshire and Ghungroo breeds, and assured the institute that the necessary paperwork for the procurement would be processed upon his return.
