Shillong, Jan 24: Gabriel D. Wangsu, Minister for Animal Husbandry & Dairying of Arunachal Pradesh, called for a paradigm shift in livestock farming. Speaking at the second day of North East Livestock Conclave in Shillong, he stressed the need to modernise the sector and attract young entrepreneurs.
The "Conclave on Dialogue for Holistic Development of Livestock Sectors in the North-East Region," chaired by S. P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, focused on addressing the challenges and opportunities of the livestock sector in the region. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh on Thursday.
Addressing the conclave, Baghel highlighted the significance of the North-East Region's growth for the overall development of India, emphasising that the nation's happiness is intertwined with the well-being of the region. He reiterated the central government's commitment to the region's growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing frequent visits to the North-East as evidence of this commitment. He acknowledged the region's potential and urged stakeholders to dedicate themselves to the sector's development.
Wangsu expressed concern over the declining livestock population in Arunachal Pradesh, citing factors like genetic regression and an aging farmer population. He advocated for comprehensive training programs, mentorship initiatives, and the implementation of the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) to equip youth with the necessary skills for modern livestock farming.
To incentivise young entrepreneurs, Minister Wangsu proposed financial support mechanisms, similar to the Unnati scheme, as well as robust insurance options to mitigate risks. He also stressed the importance of strengthening animal health services by establishing a network of "Pranibandhu" (Animal Health Workers) at the village level and leveraging technology through telemedicine and digital platforms to improve access to veterinary care.
The North East Livestock Conclave, organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya, brought together key stakeholders from all eight Northeastern states to discuss challenges and develop a roadmap for the sustainable growth of the livestock sector.
Joining the Minister from Arunachal Pradesh were senior officials, including Secretary of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Fisheries Hage Tari; Director Dr. Danjan Longri; Deputy Director Dr. Hage Taley; SVO HQ Dr. Seba Yomdo and SVO Dr. Darge Tsering.
