NAHARLAGUN, Dec 14: In a heart-wrenching incident, the collapse of an overhead water tank at St. Alphonsa School, Model Village, Naharlagun, has resulted in the tragic deaths of three students and left two others seriously injured. The mishap has plunged the school and the community into deep sorrow and raised urgent questions about infrastructure safety.
Superintendent of police, Naharlagun Mihin Gambo informed that, the tragic collapse occurred at approximately 9:00 AM during regular school hours, leaving students and staff in shock. Immediate rescue efforts were undertaken, and the injured were swiftly transported to TRIHMS for medical attention.
The deceased students has been identified as Ekam Bagang – Class IX, Rei Dol – Class IX, Marsu Dubi – Class IX. Two students who sustained injuries are Toko Dolum – Class VIII and Licha Butum – Class VI.
The injured students are currently undergoing treatment at TRIHMS, where medical teams are providing intensive care.
In the wake of the incident, police  have detained six individuals, including the school building owner, principal and four wardens.
The SP further appealed to the public to remain calm and maintain peace as authorities are conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into this unfortunate tragedy. All efforts are being made to ensure justice for the victims and their families. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, added the SP.
Reacting to the tragic incident, All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union’s Tate Tayam, Secretary of Information and Public Relations (IPR), along with Gida Tar, Auditor of AAPSU’s West Division, visited the school premises to assess the situation.
The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) has strongly condemned the school management for what it described as gross negligence that led to the tragic collapse of an overhead water tank, claiming the lives of three students and injuring two others.
In a statement, AAPSU emphasized the need for swift justice for the victims and their families. The union held the school administration accountable for failing to ensure the safety of students, calling it a preventable tragedy caused by lack of proper maintenance and oversight.
During their visit, they interacted with the affected families and expressed their condolences.
Speaking to the media, Tate Tayam stated, "This is a tragedy that could have been avoided if the management had prioritized student safety. We demand a transparent investigation and strict action against those responsible for this horrific incident."
Further, parents of injured students who are under medical care also blamed the school authorities for the negligence and demanded strict action for the loss of lives and also for the wards who sustained serious injuries.
