Changlang, Jan 7: In a shocking incident, suspected cadres of the NSCN and ULFA jointly abducted two supervisors allegedly involved in the timber business from a jungle area near Longvi village in Changlang district on January 6 last. The cadres also set a timber truck on fire, causing panic among the local villagers.
According to sources, the incident occurred between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM when five militants (three NSCN and two ULFA cadres) arrived at a timber camp in the area. Workers at the site reported that ULFA cadres fired at the truck before setting it ablaze.
Security forces intensified search and rescue operations as soon as the incident was reported. A joint team of civil police and personnel from the 10th Assam Rifles based in Nampong visited the incident site today to assess the situation and initiate further action.
Source further added that, the reason behind the incident is believed to be linked to a directive issued by the NSCN last year, calling for a halt to illegal timber logging and deforestation in the Patkai range. However, despite the warning, illegal timber activities reportedly continued in the area. Villagers claimed they were unaware of any such letter or restriction imposed by the NSCN.
The incident has created tension in Longvi village and surrounding areas. Villagers expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation, recalling a crossfire between the Indian Army and NSCN militants during the Pangsau Pass International Festival in 2020, which occurred between Jagun and Jairampur.
This latest incident raises concerns about the security of the forthcoming Pangsau Pass International Festival, scheduled to be held from January 20-22, in Nampong. The site of the abduction lies close to the India-Myanmar border, further complicating the situation.
