Itanagar, Nov 26: The elections of the All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) turned violent on the night of November 25 last, at Siddhartha Hall, Itanagar, as a clash broke out between supporters of the two contesting candidates. The violence escalated to the use of sharp weapons, lathis, and firearms, leaving multiple individuals injured and prompting a swift response from law enforcement agencies.
Superintendent of Police, Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) Rohit Rajbir Singh informed that the incident began around 9:00 PM when a group of people allegedly attempted to assault Care taker ANSU President Nabam Dodum, a former ANSU president. This confrontation quickly spiraled into a full-blown brawl, resulting in injuries to five individuals identified as Sameer Doka, Shankar Doka, Dolo Doka, Tadar Tabo, and Hite Gyadi.
The violence intensified when gunfire erupted. A supporter of a particular group reportedly fired a pistol into the crowd, while another individual also fired from a nearby building.
Law enforcement officials deployed tear gas, stun grenades, and lathi charges to disperse the mob. Despite these efforts, sporadic gunfire continued from hilltops surrounding the area. By 12:30 AM on November 26, the situation at Siddhartha Hall was brought under control, added the SP.
However, the violence did not subside with the dispersal of the crowd. Rival groups clashed again at local hospitals, where the injured were receiving treatment, forcing several victims to flee for safety.
Police recovered two live rounds and one spent shell of KF 7.65 caliber from the scene. An FIR (No. 42/24) has been registered under the BNS and Arms Act. Investigations are underway to identify unknown assailants and trace the origins of the firearms used in the violence. Ten individuals have been apprehended in connection with the incident, added SP.
