ITANAGAR, Dec 20: The families of the three students who tragically lost their lives in the overhead water tank collapse at St. Alphonsa School Naharlagun recently have made an urgent appeal for justice, demanding the re-arrest of the accused recently granted bail and close down of the school.
Speaking to the media at the Press Club in Itanagar on Friday, the bereaved families accused the school authorities for ignoring repeated warnings about leaks in the water tank. They also raised serious concerns over the bail granted to the accused, including the building owner, Kipa Rai, alleging that it could compromise the integrity of the investigation and lead to evidence tampering.
"We are devastated by the loss of our children, and we demand immediate action from the state government to ensure justice," a family member stated. "The bail granted to the accused is unacceptable, and we fear it will obstruct a fair investigation."
The families have urged the state’s Home Minister to direct law enforcement agencies to conduct an impartial probe and deliver justice. They have also appealed to the Education Minister to initiate a comprehensive inquiry into the school authorities’ role in the incident.
Highlighting what they described as gross negligence, the families criticized the decision to construct the water tank near the school assembly area, calling it a violation of safety norms. They blamed substandard construction practices and a lack of oversight for the tragedy.
In their plea, the families also sought the support of local student unions to amplify their demands and warned that they would resort to democratic protests or even customary actions if justice is not served.
To honour the memory of the young lives lost and show solidarity, a candlelight rally will be held in Naharlagun on Saturday at 6 PM. The families called on citizens to join the rally and support their cause, emphasizing the need for accountability to prevent similar incidents in the future.
