ITANAGAR, Dec 11: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), in collaboration with the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU), observed Black Day to mark their continued opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) here at NEFA Building on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media, NESO-IPR Secretary Pritam Waii Sonam emphasized that December 11 is observed annually as Black Day by NESO to protest what they describe as a draconian law detrimental to the indigenous communities of the North East. He recalled that despite widespread opposition, the Government of India passed the controversial CAA in the Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019.
The law, which provides fast-tracked citizenship for non-Muslim minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, has been criticized for its potential to disrupt the region’s demographic balance and erode the cultural identity of indigenous communities.
“This observance serves as a reminder of the political injustice inflicted upon the indigenous peoples of the North East,” Sonam stated, reiterating NESO's firm opposition to the CAA. The organization urged the Government of India to acknowledge the concerns and rights of the region’s indigenous populations and to reconsider policies that may harm their cultural and demographic integrity.
