ITANAGAR, July 21 : The Indian Medical Association Arunachal Pradesh Chapter (IMA: AP) and  Arunachal Pradesh Doctors Association (APDA) expressed their sincere gratitude to Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Health & Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge for their decisive action in addressing concerns regarding the seat allocation for  MBBS students at the state’s lone medical college, Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS).
Speaking to reporters at the press club on Sunday, President-IMA(AP) Kesang W Thongdok also expressed gratitude to the Govt of Arunachal Pradesh for being able to convince the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase the MBBS seats in TRIHMS from 50 to 100.
'We would like to share that previously there were certain discrepancies in the seat allocation system, which was disadvantageous for the indigenous APST students. As per the NMC norms, 15% of the total seats in any State-run Medical College is mandatorily allotted to the All India Quota (AIQ) which is open to all the general category candidates. The rest of the 85% seats are at the disposal of the State Government,’ he said.
According to the earlier notification vide DME,T&R/P&D-2018/PT-1 dated 9th July 2024, out of this 85% state share i.e 85 seats, 20% (16 seats) were unduly reserved for Non APST candidates and a further 4% (3 seats) were reserved for NRI candidates. “This system deprived the indigenous APST candidates a total of 19 seats which is logically unjustifiable by any means because it portrays a reservation within a reservation system. This kind of seat reservation is unheard of in any other state-run Medical College,” the President IMA-AP said.
The IMA:AP and APDA team submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Health & Family Welfare pointing out these discrepancies on 18th July 2024. After a detailed discussion, the Minister Health & Family Welfare took up the matter urgently with the Chief Minister and the Officials of the Department of Health &. Family Welfare. Since the deadline for submission of seat allocation list from the Govt of AP to NMC was on 20th July 2024, the CM, Commissioner Health and Director Medical Education took the matter on a war footing and issued a fresh notification fulfilling all the genuine demands in supersession of the previous order.
Thongdok asserted  that, with this prompt decision, the entire 85% (85 MBBS seats) in TRIHMS have been duly allotted to bonafide APST candidates.
“We applaud this prompt and historic decision taken by the Government under the leadership of CM  Perna Khandu and Health Minister  Biyuram Wahge which will truly benefit many generations of aspiring students of Arunachal who want to pursue the Medical profession,” he said.
