ITANAGAR, Jan 6: The Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) has expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Pema Khandu for his assurance to implement the long-dormant Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978 in the state soon.
Addressing the media on Monday, IFCSAP President Dr. Emi Rumi highlighted the Chief Minister's commitment, made during the recently concluded Silver Jubilee Celebration of IFCSAP. The event, attended by Chief Minister Khandu and Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram, marked a significant moment for indigenous faith advocates. Dr. Rumi stated that the Chief Minister had assured the gathering that the Act, which has remained dormant for decades, would soon be implemented.
Dr. Rumi also pointed out that even the Court has directed the state government to frame the necessary rules for the effective enforcement of the Act. He clarified that the said Act is not targeted at any particular religion but aims to promote and safeguard indigenous faiths from unlawful or forced conversions. The IFCSAP has urged the state government to expedite the process of implementing the Act.
However, the move has sparked opposition from the Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF), which has labeled the Act as "draconian." In a separate statement, ACF members warned the state government against implementing the legislation and announced plans for statewide protests.
The ACF accused Chief Minister Khandu of contradicting his earlier stance. "Recently, during a program organized by the Catholic Church, the Chief Minister declared that the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978, would not be implemented in the state. Now, he appears to have taken a U-turn," stated the ACF.
The contrasting views have brought the Act into the spotlight, igniting debates on religious freedom and the protection of indigenous faiths in the state. We await further clarity on the government's position and actions regarding the contentious legislation, said ACF.
