NIRJULI, Jan 13:  In a significant breakthrough against narcotics under Operation Dawn 2.0, the ICR Traffic Police and Nirjuli Police seized suspected heroin during a routine Motor Vehicle (MV) check near Bage Tinali.
The incident unfolded when traffic personnel stopped a two-wheeler for violations, including the rider’s failure to wear a helmet. Upon being asked to open the vehicle’s storage compartment, the unidentified rider fled the scene, abandoning the scooty.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, a bag containing suspected contraband was discovered. DySP (Traffic) Chera Saban immediately informed Nirjuli Police Station. Acting promptly, a team led by Inspector T.M. Nekam, under the supervision of SDPO Naharlagun Rishi Longdo, arrived at the scene to investigate further.
The police seized 57 plastic vials containing suspected heroin weighing 75.33 grams, a plastic pouch weighing 25.6 grams, an empty soap case, and three empty syringes. The contraband is estimated to be worth approximately ₹2 lakh in the local market. Initial investigations suggest that the drugs were sourced from outside the state and intended for distribution among the youth in the ICR region, posing a significant threat to society.
Legal action has been initiated under the NDPS Act, and efforts are underway to apprehend the absconding rider, who has already been identified.
Commending the swift and effective response, SP Naharlagun Mihin Gambo, IPS, praised the coordinated efforts of the Traffic Police and Nirjuli Police. He reiterated the importance of continued vigilance and community support in combating the drug menace. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to aid in the ongoing fight against narcotics, stated a release.
