ROING, Jan 26: A fatal accident on the Roing-Hunli road, 23 km north of Roing township, claimed four lives late Sunday night when a white Scorpio vehicle carrying six tourists veered off a steep slope and plunged onto the newly constructed Roing-Anini Highway.
The tourists, hailing from Golaghat District in Assam, included three males and three females. Tragically, four of the six passengers lost their lives in the accident. One male passenger, who was initially rescued, succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. The deceased have been identified as Ajay Chetry (32) of Gurmura, Suraj Chetry (38), Ranjit Chetry (35), and Meena Chetry (35), all from Golaghat District, Police said.
Two survivors, Hari Maya Chetry (32) and Roshni Chetry (10), were rescued after a relentless overnight effort by the district police and fire service teams. The rescue operation, carried out under extremely challenging conditions due to the steep terrain and darkness, saved their lives despite minor injuries sustained by the rescuers during the mission.
The body of one deceased has been handed over to the family following a post-mortem examination (PME) this evening, while the PMEs for the remaining three will be conducted on Tuesday.
This tragedy highlights the perilous conditions of the region’s mountainous roads.
