YUPIA, Dec 5: Reports of a large predator, possibly a tiger or leopard, roaming the Jote and Poma village areas under Papumpare district has raised concerns among local residents. Deputy Commissioner, Papumpare Jiken Bomjen confirmed that forest rangers and wildlife experts are actively investigating the matter to identify and safely capture the animal.
"At this stage, we cannot confirm whether it is a tiger or leopard as no one has seen the animal directly. However, footprints found in the dense jungle are being analyzed to determine the species," said Bomjen.
The administration has sought assistance from the Pakke Tiger Reserve authorities, given the reserve's proximity to the area. Coordination efforts with the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Pakke Tiger Reserve , RFO Banderdewa are underway, and traps and cameras have been installed in the Jote jungle area to monitor wildlife activity.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, especially to ensure children stay away from forested areas. "While it is essential to protect human life, we must also remember that the tiger is an endangered species. Under no circumstances should the animal be harmed," Bomjen appealed. He further highlighted the strict provisions of the Forest Act, stating that harming such wildlife could lead to severe legal consequences.
The administration is working diligently with the Forest Department to ensure the safety of both the local population and the animal. "We are exploring all possible measures to safely trap the animal without causing harm," he reassured.
Local residents are requested to report any sightings immediately to the Forest Department and follow all safety precautions until the situation is resolve, added the DC.
