Itanagar, Dec 23: Union Minister for Minorities and Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, defended the development of hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh, describing protests against dams as a democratic right but blaming "left-leaning groups" for allegedly misleading local villagers.
Responding to query by media here on Monday, Rijiju stated what lefties want Arunachal Pradesh should remain in a "dark age" when other nations have utilized 80-90% of their hydropower potential. “Even smaller countries like Bhutan and Nepal have successfully harnessed their hydropower resources. It is high time Arunachal realizes its potential,” he stated.
Rijiju criticized previous Congress governments for neglecting Arunachal Pradesh’s immense natural resources and assured that the current central government is committed to balanced development. “We want progress, but not at the cost of environmental degradation or the violation of indigenous rights,” he said.
He emphasized that the central government is focusing on green energy projects, including the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, which aims to generate power, create jobs, and foster development while countering China's strategic plans. Rijiju expressed concerns over China’s reported proposal to construct a 40,000–60,000 MW dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo (known as Siang in India). He also noted speculation about China's potential plans to divert the river.
“If tomorrow China diverts the river, what will happen to Arunachal? We must act wisely,” Rijiju urged. He highlighted China's expansion of dam projects on all rivers flowing through the Tibet region and into India through Arunachal , warning that early completion of these projects by China could give it significant international advantage under water-sharing norms.
Rijiju called for constructive dialogue to resolve differences over dam construction in Arunachal Pradesh. “Let us discuss and resolve the issue together, ensuring sustainable development and protection of our resources,” he stated.
