Itanagar, Dec 23: The two-day event of the 19th Foundation Day Celebration of Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) held on December 21 - 22 at JN State Museum, Itanagar, marked a significant milestone in celebrating the almost two decades of literary exploration and intellectual exchanges offered by APLS as a platform.
The first day was marked by three interesting sessions where the budding authors from Arunachal Pradesh discussed their maiden literary works. The first session was chaired by Yater Nyokir and the guest author was Dr. Gumlat Ong Maio who with his subtle humour had tickled the funny bones of the audience. He discussed his novel Once Upon a Time in College which is about the carefree and spontaneous lives of the youth and their pursuit of fun, freedom and excitement. The second session was chaired by Dr. Doyir Ete and the guest author was Miranda Pertin, whose book, Beyond the Frozen Hill captivated the imagination of the audience with its magic-realism and the mysterious and formidable Yur.
The third session was chaired by Gopal Rai and the guest author discussing her youthful book Will Spring Bloom Again was Gyati Ampi. A poetry recitation programme was also conducted at Hotel Su-Pinsa as a part of the celebration on Saturday evening.
The second day of the celebration began with an insightful ‘Workshop on Short Story Writing’ by Arindam Borkataki, where the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar awardee critic-writer explained the key elements of crafting impactful narratives. He emphasised the importance of characterisation, internal and external conflicts, and a compelling climax. Participants actively engaged in the session, posing questions about the intricacies of storytelling.
This was followed by the book launch of Dorjee Lonpu’s collection of Hindi poems, viz., Rangvihin Duniya ke Warish. Thereafter, Jummi Yomcha moderated the session of Subi Taba’s deliberation on her book, Dear Bohemian Man. The third session of the day was chaired by Wango Socio and the guest author was Dr. Taro Sindik, whose book Aksharo ki Vinti brought up important subjects for discussions such as the conflict between the subject ‘I’ and the creative ‘I’, the malicious proselytizers of religions, women issues, the language Hindi etc. While Subi Taba stressed on the importance of the role of the reading and critical community for the growth of an author, Taro Sindik acknowledged the presence of a mentor, Professor Amrendra Tripathi who had ignited the creative flame in him that had eventually led him to win the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Purashkar award in the year 2017.
The last technical session of the day was hosted by the Padmashree Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi, who narrated how several events served as catalysts for his creative mind to bring out four collections of short stories.
He lamented that though he had written more than sixty short stories, he is known mainly as a novelist despite writing only nine novels. His short stories have covered all aspects of human life, society and culture of Arunachal Pradesh. They are focused on the lives and challenges of the tribal communities during the transitional phase of NEFA and Arunachal Pradesh. This session was followed by the valedictory programme, the highlight of which was the final appraisal of the entire technical sessions of the two-day event by Dr. Bompi Riba. The participants were also given the chance to give their feedback. This year APLS invited students of nine different colleges of the state where 21 literary enthusiast students participated in the entire sessions.
Thereafter, certificates were distributed to the participants. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by the General Secretary of APLS, Mukul Pathak.
