ITANAGAR, Sep 8: A day after representatives of Jagadguru Shankaracharya advocated for a ban on cow slaughter in Arunachal Pradesh and proposed an event to declare the cow as the "Nation's Mother" (Gau Mata), the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has strongly condemned the statement.
In a press briefing, AAPSU Finance Secretary Byabang Hapo Dui voiced the Union’s disapproval, stating, "The cow is not considered a mother by us. No one should dictate the food habits of the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh." He clarified that the union does not oppose any religion but cautioned against imposing beliefs or any kind of practice on others.
“We welcome any religious event, and everyone is free to organize such programs. However, dictating what we should eat and what we should not is unacceptable," Dui added.
Jagadguru Shankaracharya is scheduled to visit Itanagar on September 27 next as a part of his Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra (GDSBY), a campaign promoting the recognition of the cow as the nation’s mother and spreading awareness about cow slaughter.
Dui said AAPSU has no objection to the event itself, however warned against interference in indigenous practices.
"Cows are viewed as animals, just like any other in our culture. If they continue to dictate or interfere in indigenous matters, AAPSU may be forced to take strong action on the upcoming event," he firmly stated.
