ITANAGAR, Sep 20: The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has accused the state BJP government of stalling a no-confidence motion against the Chief Councillor of the Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC).
Speaking to the media, APCC Vice President Toko Mina alleged that the BJP had interfered in the Council's functioning and prevented key democratic processes from taking place.
According to Mina, the Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) under the leadership of the present Chief Councillor has not held a business meeting in over six months, in violation of the Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Act. The council was elected in 2022, with the BJP initially securing victory through public mandate. However, at least 6 members later joined the Congress.
"As per the Municipal Act, the council is required to hold a meeting with elected members within a month of elections. However, no such meetings have taken place, and key appointments were made under pressure from the state BJP government," Mina alleged. She further claimed that six councillors had protested these irregularities, calling for transparency and accountability.
Those who opposed the alleged BJP interference have reportedly been sidelined and deprived of involvement in development projects, Mina stated,  while adding  that the council office has been largely defunct for the past six months.
In response to these issues, the six protesting councillors approached the District Magistrate of Pasighat to initiate a no-confidence motion against the sitting Chief Councillor and fixed July 25 last, for the meeting. However, according to Mina, the state BJP government issued an order on July 23 last to halt the move.
APCC has demanded disciplinary action against the District Magistrate and has called for the resignation of the Chief Councillor. "If these demands are not met, the APCC will launch a democratic movement in every ward," Mina warned. She also urged for the reinstatement of the six protesting councillors to their roles in the council's development works.
