ITANAGAR, Aug 11:  The proposed 36-hour bandh called by the All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) was called off late evening on Sunday following government request and intervention by the Nyishi Elite Society (NES).
In response to the 36-hour bandh, Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung had appealed to the student organization to withdraw its protest and also appealed to the Nyishi Elite Society (NES), the apex body of the Nyishi tribe to intervene.
The bandh, which was announced following the submission of a 10-point memorandum by ANSU on October 2023, had initially received a government response in November. However, due to the election process, further action was delayed, prompting the union to call for the bandh. On August 3, a meeting was held between the state government and ANSU executives to discuss the issues raised in the memorandum. Two critical points were addressed at length: the immediate repeal of the Arunachal Pradesh District Based Entrepreneur and professional Incentive Development and Promotional Act 2015 and the urgent need to revamp decaying government schools across the state, said the Home Minister while speaking to the media on Sunday. During the meeting, the government assured the union that any amendments to the District Based Entrepreneurship Act 2015 would be made after thorough discussions with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and other state stakeholders. Natung emphasized that the current government operates with transparency and is committed to the welfare of the people. He urged ANSU to call off the bandh, especially as the upcoming Independence Day celebrations could be disrupted by the protest.
NES President reported that following requests from both the government and Nyishi legislators, NES has urged ANSU to reconsider and cancel the proposed bandh. Furthermore, the NES President has requested that the government and the Nyishi Legislative Forum to hold a joint meeting with ANSU to discuss and resolve the demands put forward by the student organization.
