ITANAGAR, Dec 10: In a major counter-espionage breakthrough, Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested two men from Jammu & Kashmir for allegedly spying on Indian security forces and maintaining links with Pakistan-based handlers. The operation, grounded in “credible and actionable” intelligence, has exposed what investigators describe as a deeper network attempting to activate anti-national elements in the Northeast.
The prime accused, Nazir Ahmad Malik of Kupwara district, was intercepted on November 22 from a rented accommodation in Ganga village, Chimpu. According to the FIR lodged by the Chimpu police station, Malik had been under surveillance after intelligence agencies flagged suspicious movements within the area.
During interrogation, Malik allegedly confessed to collecting and transmitting sensitive information related to Army and paramilitary deployments, security installations, and troop movements. Police sources said he maintained covert communication with handlers in Pakistan through encrypted Telegram channels, most notably a channel named “Al AQSA.”
He reportedly admitted to receiving instructions for tasks involving explosive placement, arson, and other activities aimed at undermining national security.
Following revelations made by Malik, police arrested a second accused—Sabir Ahmed Mir, also from Kupwara—picked up from the Abotani Colony area of Itanagar. Mir was allegedly in touch with the same foreign handler and, according to investigators, had been instructed to help facilitate illegal cross-border movements of Pakistani nationals and act as a courier for arms.
DIGP  Itanagar, T. Amo (IPS), has confirmed the arrests, underscoring the gravity of the case. “Based on alerts from outside Arunachal Pradesh, our teams acted swiftly. The two accused are now in judicial custody. Their main handler, believed to be operating from outside the state, remains untraceable. We are pursuing all leads with utmost seriousness as this concerns national security,” he stated.
