BORDUMSA/ITANAGAR, Sep 4: The situation turned volatile in Bordumsa, Changlang district, on Friday after an alleged stone-pelting incident involving members of the Chakma-Hajong community against delegates of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing process at the ADC office.
Among many, one Khoda Lazer, an AAPSU member was seriously injured and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment.
The AAPSU team, led by its Vice President (Protocol), Nabam Gandhi, had reportedly reached Bordumsa to monitor the SIR exercise and keep vigil against alleged bogus enrolment. According to AAPSU, several of its members sustained injuries during the ensuing confrontation.
Security forces intervened to bring the situation under control and reportedly fired tear gas to disperse the mob.
Following the violence, President AAPSU Meje Taku called an emergency meeting at Itanagar and demanded immediate suspension of the SIR exercise in areas where Chakma-Hajong voters are being enrolled, citing concerns over the manner in which the process was being conducted.
Addressing a press conference at the Press Club in Itanagar, AAPSU president Meje Taku alleged that one of the union’s activists was targeted, attacked with a knife, and threatened by members of the Chakma community.
“The culprit who targeted AAPSU leaders and the ringleader should be arrested immediately,” AAPSU demanded, asserting that it would not tolerate such incidents.
Taku further alleged that certain government officials were assisting members of the Chakma-Hajong community during the SIR exercise and demanded their immediate suspension.
“We have received information that there are some government officers who have bonding with Chakma-Hajong and are playing favouritism,” he said.
The students’ body also demanded that the Home Department immediately arrest those allegedly involved in Friday’s violence and ensure that no FIR is registered against AAPSU activists or leaders in connection with the incident.
Taku further announced that it will convene a meeting with community-based organisations and student unions, NGOs from across Arunachal Pradesh on September 12 to discuss the ongoing Chakma-Hajong issue.
Meanwhile, Chakma Leaders denied their involvement in any kind of violence.
