ITANAGAR, Jul 15: A high-level state meeting on Road Safety was convened today at the Civil Secretariat in Itanagar under the chairmanship of the Minister for Transport, Ojing Tasing. The meeting brought together Commissioners and Secretaries, from the Transport Department, Home, Finance, Planning, Police, Public Works Department (PWD), Education, and Health departments, along with Chief Engineers of PWD (D&P), HQ BRO and Director of NERIST.
The meeting was aimed at reviewing the current road safety scenario in the state and formulating multi-sectoral strategies to reduce road accidents and fatalities. The Minister expressed concern over the rising number of road mishaps, particularly in urban centers and along the national highways, and stressed the urgent need for coordinated efforts to ensure safer roads for all.
Key issues discussed in the meeting included, Identification of accident-prone areas (black spots) and urgent rectification measures, Strict enforcement of traffic rules, especially regarding over-speeding, drunken driving, and helmet usage, Strengthening driver training and licensing procedures, Integration of road safety awareness into school curricula, painting of Zebra Crossing especially near education institutions and hospitals, ensuring safe Transportation of School Children, giving more attention for entering the data in iRAD application, Improved coordination between departments for timely road maintenance and signage installation, Enhanced emergency medical response services in accident zones
The Minister directed all concern departments to be active and to submit action plans prior to next meeting and advised the departments to provide with accurate date especially on Hit and Run accident cases.
Tasing assured that the state government is committed to allocating adequate resources for road safety initiatives. He further called for active community participation and public awareness campaigns to build a culture of responsible driving.
Earlier, Vivek Pandety, the Transport Commissioner presented recent data on road accidents in the state, highlighting the major causes and demographic trends.
He also highlighted few directives by SCCoRS (Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety) and MoRTH like the RAH-VEER schemes - also known as the Good Samaritan scheme, a government initiative aimed at encouraging people to help accident victims by providing immediate assistance and rushing them to a hospital within the "golden hour". The scheme rewards those who help by providing cash award, along with a Certificate of Appreciation, Compensation to the victims of Hit and Run Moter Accidents Schemes- 2022, Motor third party insurance, Implementations of ATMS (Advance Traffic Management systems) etc.
Representatives from department took part in the discussion and gave various valuable suggestions for the better road Safety within the state.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to constitute a PMU (Project management Unit) having domain expert to be founded from State Road Safety Fund within this financial year to monitor implementation and review progress regularly.
