TAWANG/SELA, Jan 16: A tragic incident unfolded at Sela Lake in Tawang district after three tourists plunged into the frozen lake, resulting in one confirmed death, one person was rescued, while another remains missing.
As per official sources, the victims were part of a group of seven tourists from Kerala. Despite a strict prohibition on walking over the frozen lake, three of them reportedly ventured onto the icy surface, which suddenly gave way, plunging them into the freezing waters.
Rescue team comprising the Indian Army, police and some locals managed to save one of the victims while one body has since been recovered. Search operations for the remaining missing tourist were suspended due to extreme cold and darkness, but will resume on Saturday at 8 am, informed the Superintendent of Police (SP), Tawang. Dr. D W Thungon.
The SP reiterated that entry onto the frozen lake has been banned since December 2025, and the district administration had issued clear orders in this regard. Police patrols are conducted regularly to prevent such incidents.
All three victims are reported to be male tourists aged between 24 and 26 years.The rescued person has been identified as Anandu (27), and body of Dinu (26) has been recovered and Mahadev(24) is still missing, added the SP.
