TAWANG/SELA, Jan 17: In a tragic conclusion to a distressing incident at the frozen high-altitude Sela Lake, the body of the second tourist, Mahadev M (24) from Kerala, was recovered on Saturday morning at around 10 am, police confirmed.
The recovery was carried out through an intensive joint search operation involving the Indian Army, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the civil police, amid harsh weather and challenging terrain.
Officials said Mahadev’s body was found near the accident site and would be taken to the Jang Community Health Centre for post-mortem examination and completion of legal formalities.
According to Superintendent of Police Tawang Dr. D W Thungon, a group of seven tourists from Kerala had arrived in Tawang on Thursday. While visiting the frozen Sela Lake, one member of the group accidentally slipped into the icy waters.
In a courageous but fatal attempt to save him, Dinu (26) and Mahadev (24) jumped into the lake. While the first tourist managed to escape safely, both rescuers were swept under the frozen surface by the extreme cold and strong undercurrents.
Dinu’s body was recovered on Thursday afternoon, while Mahadev’s body was retrieved on Friday morning, officially bringing the search and rescue operation to an end.
Authorities have once again urged visitors to avoid venturing onto frozen lakes, warning that even a moment’s misstep can turn fatal in such extreme conditions.
