Tuting, Nov 28: Kepang La Day was commemorated recently on November 17, with ceremonial grandeur, patriotic zeal and deep collective reverence across the Upper Siang district. Organised under the aegis of Spear Corps in close coordination with the Civil Administration, Upper Siang District, the observance highlight the strategic importance of the frontier while honouring the courage, unity and commitment that define this region. The presence of Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, AVSM, VSM, GOC Spear Corps, and Alo Libang, MLA Tuting, brought special distinction to the day and reaffirmed the Indian Army’s enduring dedication to safeguarding India’s northern boundaries.
The celebrations began at Tuting, a frontier town renowned for its steadfast loyalty and its role as a sentinel of India’s sovereignty. At Tuting Top, a 72-feet National Flag was inaugurated with full military decorum. This monumental installation stands as a resolute symbol of India’s unity, resilience and commitment to protecting every inch of the nation’s sacred soil. The flag was erected through the generous contribution of Ms Uma Maskai, a philanthropist and social worker, along with the combined efforts of Indian Army troops who worked with precision and determination to bring the project to fruition.
Following the ceremony at Tuting, the commemorations continued at Gelling, the first village of India where the Tricolour greets the rising sun. Gelling holds immense strategic and symbolic significance as the northern gateway of the Siang Valley. It stands at the point where the Siang River enters Indian territory, representing the beginning of India’s frontier guardianship. On this historic ground, Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar visited the cemetery at Kepang La Pass to pay homage to the courageous soldiers and civilians who stood firm in the defence of this region.
During the solemn ceremony, he laid a wreath at the cemetery of soldiers of 2 MADRAS and 11 ASSAM RIFLES at the Chorten in Kepang La, honouring the indomitable spirit, sacrifice and dedication of those who never returned during the Battle of Kepang La (1962).
As part of the commemorations, a bike rally was conducted from Tuting to Kepang La through the narrow roads of Upper Siang District, with 25 enthusiastic civilian riders participating from the border towns. Their involvement added depth and significance to the event, showcasing the unity between the Armed Forces and the local population, which continues to shape the resilient spirit of the Siang Valley
In addition, an inter-school sports meet was organised for the first time at Vibrant Village Tuting, featuring a display by AMAR-trained young children. Together, soldiers and civilians reaffirmed their shared responsibility in maintaining the security, dignity and integrity of the nation.
