PASIGHAT, Nov 11: In a major development in the mysterious death of 13-year-old Cadet Tadu Haro, a Class VII student of Sainik School Niglok in East Siang district, the family of the deceased has come forward with new revelations after reviewing CCTV footage from the night of October 31 — the eve of his death.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Tadu Nancy, the elder sister of the late cadet, said the footage offered a clearer picture of the horrifying events that unfolded inside the hostel, alleging that Haro was subjected to repeated ragging and physical harassment by students of Classes VII and X for nearly three hours.
“The CCTV footage clearly shows that Haro was being ragged continuously that night. There were multiple instances where seniors could be seen intimidating and harassing him,” she said. The ragging(torture) lasted for almost 3 hours, but none from the school authority even visited the hostel to check or intervene, which is very unfortunate for such a valued institution. Moreover, as per information, all eight Children in Conflict with the Law are freely attending class and playing on the school campus, which is very disheartening, Nancy further added.
The 13-year-old cadet’s lifeless body was found within the school premises on November 1, sparking widespread outrage and protests across the state. The incident had initially been described by school authorities as a “tragic and unexplained death,” but angry parents, student bodies, and civil society groups had accused the institution of a cover-up and demanded justice for Haro.
Following massive public outcry, the case was transferred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch, which later arrested three school staff members, including two housemasters and one hostel superintendent, for alleged negligence and dereliction of duty.
Earlier, Haro’s classmates and hostel inmates had claimed that the deceased had been complaining of mental and physical harassment in the days leading up to the tragedy. The family had also alleged that the school administration failed to inform them promptly about the incident and had attempted to downplay the seriousness of the matter.
The shocking revelation from the CCTV footage now appears to substantiate the family’s long-held suspicion that the boy’s death was a direct result of brutal ragging and systemic failure on the part of the school authorities.
Meanwhile, the family has appealed to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to transfer all eight students identified as being involved in the incident to a juvenile home, stressing that justice must be delivered without delay.
“Our brother suffered for hours before his death while others stood by and watched. This was not an accident — it was torture. We want justice for Haro,” Nancy said.
