RONO HILLS, Nov 25: Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and Rajiv Gandhi University (CDOE) concluded its Institution-Level Debate Competition today under the ongoing APLA@50 Outreach Connect, the flagship initiative commemorating the Golden Jubilee of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (1975–2025).
However, in view of the sudden demise of Dr. Tai Nyori, former Registrar and former Controller of Examinations of RGU, the inaugural session of the programme was called off. The entire gathering solemnly observed two minutes of silence to honour the memory of the departed academician. His timeless and pioneering contribution to the development of the university in particular and the state in general has been unequivocal.
The proceedings were formally initiated by Moyir Riba, Assistant Professor at Rajiv Gandhi University and the Nodal Officer for the APLA@50 Outreach Connect. She welcomed the judges, participants, APLA representatives, and faculty members, and introduced the purpose of the Golden Jubilee celebration, which aims to promote constitutional values, democratic awareness, and youth participation in civic processes.
The debate for the day was conducted on the motion, “Safeguarding indigenous rights and promoting equitable development in Arunachal Pradesh do not depend on implementing the Sixth Schedule.”
The best speakers for and against the motion, who had earlier emerged as winners in the institutional debates across the state, represented their respective institutes during today’s competition. The session was presided over by Prof. Miazi Hazam, Head of the Department of English, RGU, who chaired the debate as Speaker of the Session.
The panel of judges for the event comprised Mama Tang, Deputy Registrar of the Arunachal Pradesh State Human Rights Commission; Irani Sonowal, Managing Editor of NEWSFY, Itanagar; and Dr. Saurav Mitra, Faculty, CDOE, Rajiv Gandhi University. Representatives from the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly — Dedu Poyom, Librarian, and Shri S. K. Dey, Senior Reporter — were also present and interacted with the students.
The debate saw compelling arguments from both sides, with participants drawing from constitutional provisions, administrative practices, and socio-cultural realities. The rebuttal round that followed, conducted in reverse order, witnessed strong counterarguments. Prof. Hazam concluded the session by appreciating the students for their clarity of thought, discipline, and decorum. Dr. Nyajum Lollen, Assistant Professor, CDOE, RGU, and the coordinator of the programme, was one of the most important personnel in conducting the entire series of events during this four-month-long celebration and making it a success.
The results of the State-Level Mega Debate Competition will be announced on November 26 which is Constitution Day, to be observed at the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The APLA@50 Outreach Connect has served as an important platform to celebrate fifty years of legislative history while nurturing constitutional awareness, civic responsibility, and leadership among the student community across Arunachal Pradesh. This was the concluding event of the entire outreach, which reached out to more than 20 colleges across the state with informative lectures by professionals about fundamental rights and duties. It blended informative discussion with youth participation in understanding the process of governance and how they are a part of it. More than 3000 students were reached through this initiative, fulfilling the true objective of this endeavour.
