Ziro Valley, Nov 13: The Apatani Youth Organisation (AYA) successfully organised the 11th edition of Mission Clean Kley River today at Ziro with the inspiring theme “Clean Ziro, Green Ziro.”
The programme was formally flagged off by MLA Er. Hage Appa, in the presence of Oli Perme Deputy Commissioner, Keni Bagra Superintendent of Police, Heads of Departments, and representatives from Tanii Supun Dukun (TSD), Apatani Women Association Ziro (AWAZ), Apatani Students’ Union (ASU), Ziro Royal Enfielders (ZRE) and several other community-based organisations.
In the day-long cleanliness drive, the entire stretch of the Kley River—the lifeline of Ziro Valley—and all its tributaries were cleaned by thousands of volunteers. The entire region was divided into 16 sectors, each supervised by an HoD and supported by AYA volunteers. Participants included students from various educational institutions, members of government departments, Police personnel, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), NGOs, and apex bodies of the valley, making it a massive community-driven effort.
Speaking at the occasion, MLA Er. Hage Appa, expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Kley River. He recalled that its water was once clean and fit for consumption, but due to indiscriminate dumping of garbage and waste, the river has become polluted, leading to clogging of streams and flash floods during the rainy season. He appealed to the residents of Ziro Valley to refrain from dumping wastes into the river and its tributaries and to take collective responsibility in preserving the valley’s fragile ecosystem.
Subu Opo Sala, President of AYA, extended heartfelt gratitude to all participants and supporting departments for their cooperation and enthusiasm. He informed that in the next edition, AYA plans to enhance the methodology of the cleanliness mission by making it a week-long programme—starting with mechanical cleaning of streams and rivers, followed by manual collection of residual waste.
The Mission Clean Kley River initiative aims to strengthen community engagement in environmental conservation, promote sustainable waste management practices and ensure the long-term preservation of Ziro’s natural ecosystem.
