Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

Arunachal Pradesh is catching up with the lost and wasted times ever since it became a full-fledged state in 1987 and showing to the nation that given inclination and willingness, it can do wonders. The continuing Sarkar aapke dwar (government at your doorstep) programme is making waves with government officials reaching out to places which were once left to the fate of its denizens due to remoteness owing to non-development of infrastructure for the inaccessible. The situation is now changing and from the response to the ‘government at your doorstep’ programme from the tribes of hitherto unreached places, we can gauge the enthusiasm of the people. We had already written about it in these columns earlier. It is again mentioned because of another unique programme, unseen anywhere in the country, which has made waves among the youths of the state for more than a week like the unleashed waters from the dams. That is ‘Pay back to society,’ the brainchild of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh BD Mishra, who himself is a retired brigadier of Indian Army. The pay back mission by the serving officers of Indian Army, Navy and Air Force reached out to 83 schools and 10 colleges in different parts of the State with enthusiastic participation of more than 17,660 students. A huge record, indeed.
This is a great achievement for the state striving to find its moorings. The mission was led by Major General Jarken Gamlin, the senior-most officer from the state. The aim of the mission was to spread awareness among the youths of the state about a career in armed forces of the country so as to mould a useful life for society, state and the nation. They did not even stop at that. Motivational speeches included against drug abuse too and also how to become good citizens. According to Maj Gen Gamlin there were larger number of enthusiastic girl participants and he  recalled that there were numerous requests for NCC and Scouts and Guides units in the educational institutions.
The brainchild of Governor Mishra,  he is probably  the only governor who had travelled in most parts of the state including the so-called inaccessible areas and acquired firsthand knowledge of the life in the mountains and valleys. Of course, the state government too chipped in with its resources to make the programme a success. But officers would not have been able to do this without permission from their topmost bosses which was facilitated by Governor Mishra. Kudos to him for a mission accomplished-Phase 1.
