Much before the lockdown came into effect and thereafter all throughout this disciplined and controlled life the nation has accepted with a certain degree of reluctance though, the words doing the rounds have been ‘social distancing’. Preaching its necessity has remained one of the principal tasks of the administration and on Tuesday, a new finding has arrived which will go a long way in explaining and convincing people why this factor is being stressed upon.

The ICMR which has been playing a stellar role in the country’s Covid-19 battle has come out with some startling facts, based on research. According to it, it has been found that a Covid-19 patient possess the capacity to infect as many as 406 people over a span of 30 days if there are no preventive measures such as lockdown and social distancing. And with the said measures in place, the possibility of the infection can be reduced to an average of just two-and-a-half persons per patient during the same period. With this new finding, a series of questions which had thus far remained incomprehensively  answered or not answered at all will at last have a credible explanation which will go a long way in effacing the misconceptions nurtured by the common people. A feature which can commonly be observed all over the country is that of a certain level of resentment among the masses for strict imposition of the social distancing advisory. These are excesses and tantamounts to overstepping by the administration, allegations of such kinds also did the rounds. But it’s purely science which will explain the modus operandi of this deadly virus and why it has been so successful in making such deep penetration into the population all across the world. On Monday, WHO has stated that coronavirus can spread about one to three days before symptoms start which means that irrespective of whether the person is symptomatic or presymptomatic, the spread of the disease from the carrier continue unabated through droplets from the nose and mouth. And in our country tests where tests are not being done so far to the desired extent which otherwise means there are high chances of potential carriers remaining undetected, the only option is to take no chances but to stick to this very important advisory.

It must be said that, this new revelation, a caveat rather, is a solid and immensely useful addition to the Covid-19 awareness literature which must be propagated among the masses right from now. For Arunachal, the campaigns scheduled for the immediate days must necessarily incorporate this in as much understandable language as possible and advertisements on all forms of media-print, electronic, digital must carry it without fail.

An effective tool for convincing has finally arrived. It remains to be seen how judiciously it is used.
