Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

Governor of the state  Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra during his three-day official tour to Tamil Nadu had commented  that role of Indian  army transcends well beyond the duties of protecting the nation and her citizens from enemies. He had once again reminded that it is through integrating with aspirations of local populace and becoming a part of them, the inherent ethos of the army can be practically implemented. It is strikingly true in historical context of Arunachal Pradesh where the word ‘amiability’ would perhaps be most appropriate to define the term 'army-civilian relationship'.

It is the other side of the nation’s army or more broadly of the  armed  forces in entirety, which also deserves  similar amounts of attention  and admiration  like  any heroic  act of  vanquishment of enemies. These bravehearts are traditionally  known for their valour and  it is only at times of internal crises,  the citizens have a taste of their sensitivity. Truly, it would be difficult to find a place in the country which had not received their saving touches when it comes to  tackling the issues of law & order or natural calamities be it floods, tsunami, earthquake or any other  and  in developmental works too.

The strong bond that exist today between the Arunachalees and the Indian army has its roots in the 1962 Sino-Indian war. Although it’s a war lost miserably and better forgotten, the  enormous contribution of the people of the state is still remembered with warmth. Besides helping the national army in all possible ways, they didn’t hesitate to give away their most prized possession-land which was needed  for  setting  up war bases, roads, bridges, bunkers , barracks and many such installations. It was nationalism redefined by the people of the state and the bonhomie continues unabated today. It needs little mentioning that Arunachal is the most strategic frontier state since it borders with China, whose intentions are all but sinister to the core and guarding this part of the nation has always been a huge challenge for the army. And despite the snarl of the formidable foe, topographical inhospitality and inclement weather they do it with all smiles and added energy since they always enjoy the at-home feeling here. Army’s reciprocation to Arunachal’s  fraternity are visible everywhere in the state- from building roads,  bailey bridges, schools, hospitals,  or infrastructures of similar kinds, to  rescue operations for recurring disasters  and so on, all for the civilian population.

This mutual fidelity has taken years to blossom and much of the state’s strategic development goals as well as the country’s security durability will depend on its sustained continuance. It’s a bond worth nurturing.
