Pasighat, Jul 22: In a tragic end to a weekend outing, the body of a 21-year-old youth who went missing at Sirki Waterfall in East Siang district was recovered on Monday morning after a relentless 36-hour search operation carried out by Pasighat Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Army personnel.
The deceased, Karan Guwala of Palpati village in Dhemaji district, Assam, had visited the popular tourist spot on July 20 with three of his friends for a leisure trip. According to his friends, Karan received a phone call from his father at 2:19 PM and informed them he would take a quick dip before returning. He ventured towards the waterfall alone and failed to return.
Despite an initial search by his friends, Karan could not be located. The matter was reported to his family and Pasighat Police around 5:30 PM. A police team was dispatched the same evening, but the operation had to be halted due to darkness and safety concerns.
The search resumed the following day on July 21 with a team comprising four police personnel and nine SDRF members, braving continuous rainfall and slippery terrain, but with no success. On July 22, the operation was intensified with the deployment of 27 police personnel, the SDRF team, and a unit from Sigar Military Station. Using anchor-shaped hooks, the rescue team successfully retrieved the body from the base of the waterfall at approximately 10:45 AM.
The body was transported to BPGH, Pasighat, where an inquest and post-mortem examination were conducted.
The remains were handed over to the deceased’s maternal uncle, Pritam Chetry, for final rites.
Pasighat Police registered a UD (Unnatural Death) case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). While preliminary investigations suggest accidental drowning, the final cause of death will be confirmed upon receipt of the post-mortem report.
