BOMDILA, Sep 23: Normal life in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district came to a grinding halt today as the All West Kameng District Students’ Union (AWKDSU) enforced a 24-hour bandh demanding immediate joining of transferred teachers.
The bandh, which began at 5 AM, was observed peacefully but severely affected business establishments, government offices, transportation, and daily activities across the district.
AWKDSU called the shutdown in protest against the non-compliance of 11 out of 12 teachers who were transferred to West Kameng on July 20, but have not joined their respective schools even after two months. Only one teacher, Zaenam Tana (posted at Namshu), has reported for duty.
The union alleged that despite repeated assurances from four MLAs and deferring their earlier bandh until September 17, the state government has failed to resolve the crisis. “Our demand is simple—send the teachers immediately so that the academic well-being of our students does not suffer further,” said AWKDSU General Secretary Dorjee Tashi, alongside Bandh Call Issue Chairman and Education Secretary Dorjee Wangchu Jari.
The absentee teachers include subject experts in Science, English, History, and Geography, along with primary teachers, whose absence has crippled classroom learning across the district.
Earlier, West Kameng Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate, Akriti Sagar, issued an order terming the bandh “illegal and unauthorized,” urging citizens not to participate in the shutdown.
Despite the administration’s appeal, the bandh recorded wide public response, with roads deserted, markets closed, and educational institutions non-functional.
With the agitation intensifying, AWKDSU has warned of escalating to a 48-hour bandh if authorities fail to act promptly.
