KANUBARI, Jul 30: Minister of Agriculture & Allied Departments, Gabriel Denwang Wangsu, today called upon farmers to transform traditional pig rearing into profitable commercial ventures through modern scientific techniques at an awareness camp held at the Multipurpose Community Hall, Kanubari.
The program, organized under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) of ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig, Rani, Guwahati, in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Longding, focused on scientific piggery management and distribution of pig feed along with Pusa Beej vegetable seed kits for school kitchen garden programs.
Speaking at the event, the Minister urged farmers to move beyond traditional methods of rearing just one or two pigs and instead develop piggery as a sustainable business venture. "Modern challenges in this field require modern techniques and training. The traditional way of breeding is no longer applicable, and farmers must adopt biosafety measures and other required protocols," he stated.
Wangsu acknowledged that many farmers have received training through various government programs and expressed optimism for surplus production in the coming year. He assured that the government is prepared with meat processing facilities and marketing linkage support and announced the government's readiness to upscale beneficiary-oriented programmes in the future.
Minister Wangsu further directed officers of KVK and departments to work collaboratively to ensure maximum benefit reaches the farming community.
Dr. Juwar Doley, Senior Scientist from ICAR-NRC on Pig, Rani, Guwahati, delivered the opening remarks, followed by technical presentations on scientific piggery management covering breed selection, housing, feeding, disease control and market linkage by scientists from ICAR-NRC.
The event witnessed interactive sessions between farmers and scientists led by experts from ICAR-NRC on Pig, allowing participants to directly address their queries and concerns regarding pig farming practices.
ADC Kanubari Yashwant Meena (IAS), Dr. Danjan Longri, Director of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Prof. Lobsang Wangchu, Head of Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre of ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Basar and Dr. Ojoli Moyong, DVO, Longding, also spoke and highlighted departmental policies and support mechanisms.
Following the awareness camp, Wangsu toured several development sites in Kanubari, including the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Mopakhat and the soon-to-be-operational Model Degree College. He also inspected the local water treatment plant, PMGSY road projects and other infrastructure works, accompanied by officials of relevant departments.
