ITANAGAR, Sep 24: Frustrated by over a decade of government inaction and broken promises, a total of 145 Itanagar Traffic Wardens (ITWs) have launched an indefinite peaceful sit-in protest at the Tennis Court, Indira Gandhi Park, demanding their long-overdue absorption into the Arunachal Pradesh Home Guard service.
The wardens, who have been managing traffic and ensuring road safety in the state capital since 2012, are seeking their appointment against 200 sanctioned Home Guard posts — positions that were specifically created to induct them. Despite repeated assurances from the government, including a Cabinet decision in their favour, the process has remained stalled, pushing the wardens into financial hardship and emotional distress.
“We have dedicated over a decade to serving the people of Itanagar-Naharlagun — working tirelessly on busy roads, enduring extreme weather, and even stepping up during critical times like the COVID-19 pandemic, Assembly elections, and VIP movements. Yet, we continue to survive on a meagre salary that barely supports our families. With age catching up and no job security, we are left with no choice but to demand what was promised,” said a protesting ITW representative.
The protest highlights the growing resentment among the wardens, who feel betrayed by hollow assurances and ignored despite their vital public service. They have vowed to continue their indefinite dharna until the government fulfils its commitment to absorb them into the Home Guard service.
