YINGKIONG, Mar 12: Support for the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) continues to gain momentum in Upper Siang district, with 56 more residents of Komkar village submitting their consent for conducting the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) survey on Thursday.
The consent letters were formally handed over to Deputy Commissioner Talo Jerang at the DC’s Conference Hall in Yingkiong. Representing the 56 residents, Obi Taram and Aton Minno submitted the letters in the presence of other villagers who support the PFR survey.
Officials said the latest development reflects the growing backing from the local community for preliminary survey activities related to the proposed mega hydropower project on the Siang River.
Earlier, on December 30, 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) supporting the PFR survey was signed by 245 residents of Komkar village at Itanagar. With the fresh submission, the number of consenting households has now risen to 297 out of the total 302 households in the village, indicating overwhelming community support for the survey process.
Deputy Commissioner Talo Jerang appreciated the villagers for what he described as their forward-looking approach and collective commitment to development initiatives. He acknowledged the cooperation shown by the residents and expressed hope that such constructive participation would help facilitate informed decision-making regarding the proposed project.
The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, one of the major proposed hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh, is currently undergoing preliminary technical assessments through the PFR stage to evaluate its feasibility and potential environmental and social impacts.
