LONGDING, Jul 4: Frustrated by repeated government inaction and false assurances, thousands of students under the banner of the Longding District Students’ Union (LDSU) took to the streets today, staging a massive protest demanding immediate placement of adequate teachers across schools in Longding district.
Waving placards and shouting slogans, the students held a peaceful dharna, denouncing the state government’s apathy towards the crumbling education system in the district. The demonstrators expressed outrage over the chronic shortage of teachers and the non-functional status of the government college, which was promised to start this academic session.
Addressing the agitated crowd, LDSU President Nokphe Pansa lashed out at the government’s failure to act, stating, “We have met the Education Minister and Department officials multiple times in the past year, but no concrete steps have been taken. Instead of appointing more teachers, we are witnessing their transfer out of Longding.”
He further revealed that, when questioned about the transfers, the Director of School Education allegedly informed them that such decisions come directly from the office of the Education Minister.
Pansa reiterated LDSU’s demand for the immediate functionalization of the government college in Longding, adding, “The college was assured to be operational from this session, yet there has been no progress on the ground.”
Issuing a stern warning to the government, the LDSU president said, “Today’s protest is just a dharna. If our demands are ignored, we will be compelled to launch an indefinite strike.”
“Teachers are being appointed only on paper, but in reality, not a single one has reported for duty. Shockingly, there are schools in Longding where not even a single teacher has been appointed till date,” said LDSU General Secretary Mannai Wangsu.
“Moreover, several schools are functioning without Headmasters or Principals, further crippling the education system in the district,” he added.
He also informed that, a fresh memorandum has been submitted to DC Longding along with the Education Minister.
