Itanagar, Jun 11: The Siang District Students’ Union (SDSU) has raised a strong alarm over the continued non-functionality of the newly inaugurated Boleng District Hospital, months after its formal inauguration on December 19, 2024.
Addressing the media at the Arunachal Press Club today, SDSU Vice President (Protocol) Karban Tamut said the inoperative hospital has left thousands of residents in Siang district without access to even the most basic healthcare services.
Health Secretary SDSU Aro Mize expressed deep frustration on behalf of the public. They stated that despite the inauguration ceremony, the hospital has not become functional due to a severe shortage of specialist doctors, medical officers, and other essential health personnel. As a result, the building stands idle while patients continue to suffer.
In a detailed memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the union appealed for immediate government intervention. They stressed the urgent need for posting of key specialists, strengthening of the Community Health Centre at Rumgong, and immediate transfer of medical operations from the old facility to the new district hospital infrastructure. The SDSU leaders pointed out that many lives are being endangered by the lack of timely medical attention, especially during emergencies.
Aro Mize noted that patients, including pregnant women, children, and the elderly, are being forced to travel as far as 46 kilometers to Aalo or 93 kilometers to Bakin Pertin General Hospital in Pasighat to receive treatment. He added that these journeys become even more dangerous during the monsoon season, often resulting in life-threatening delays.
The SDSU has called on the government to treat this issue with the urgency and compassion it deserves. The union also confirmed that copies of their memorandum have been forwarded to various state departments and local MLAs, hoping for swift and meaningful action to address the healthcare crisis in the district.
