DELHI/ITANAGAR, Sep 7: In a shocking incident, Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum (SIFF) Legal Advisor, Bhanu Tatak was reportedly detained by immigration officials at Delhi airport on Sunday and prevented from boarding her flight to Dublin, Ireland, where she was scheduled to attend a three-month exchange programme at Dublin City University beginning September 9.
Bhanu Tatak, a leading activist opposing the proposed Siang Dam, alleged she was stopped on the basis of false cases filed by the then Siang Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon and Minister Ojing Tasing, accusing her of leading protests and even of “attacking” the minister.
Bhanu informed “I was denied my flight to Dublin University. The immigration officer is not giving me any written order. These false charges are nothing but attempts to silence my voice for the people and environment of Arunachal Pradesh.”
Her passport was confiscated and later returned, but she remains barred from travel and under threat due to the pending police case.
Meanwhile, the NSUI Arunachal Pradesh strongly condemned the incident, calling it a blatant misuse of power by the BJP government.
“We stand firmly with Bhanu Tatak and all those fighting against injustice and exploitation. Instead of addressing genuine concerns on the destructive Siang Dam project, the BJP government under CM Pema Khandu is harassing citizens, intellectuals, and activists who dare to speak the truth,” NSUI stated on its social media platform.
The organization further warned that such actions are “a direct assault on freedom of speech and democratic rights” and expose the government’s “anti-youth, anti-people, and anti-democratic governance.”
