GEKU,Jul 14: A massive protest march led by the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF) saw the participation of thousands of villagers from across the Siang belt, as local communities voiced their staunch opposition to the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).
The protest comes in response to a recent meeting notice issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), regarding the implementation of SUMP. In a strongly worded public representation addressed to the PMO, SIFF has reiterated its uncompromising stand against the dam construction and condemned what they call an “unconstitutional and forceful imposition of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)” to facilitate the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) process.
“We, the Adi people of Siang, do not want to dam our sacred Aane Siang, nor be displaced from our ancestral lands,” reads the public letter issued by the forum.
The protesters, holding placards that read “No Means No”, “Save Siang, Save Our Future”, and “Respect Indigenous Rights”, are currently on an indefinite peaceful protest, vowing to continue their agitation until the project is permanently scrapped.
The SIFF, in its appeal, demanded the immediate cancellation of the SUMP, halting of all pre-construction, outreach, CSR activities, and withdrawal of CAPF from the region.
