NONGTAW/NAMSAI, Jul 20: Security forces have intensified counter-insurgency operations across eastern Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Assam following credible intelligence reports about the presence of multiple ULFA (Independent) hit squads in the region.
In a significant breakthrough, a joint operation by Assam Rifles, CRPF, and Arunachal Pradesh Police led to the recovery of a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near a culvert in Nongtaw village under Piyong Circle in Namsai district on Saturday last. Officials suspect the device may have been planted to target patrolling security personnel ahead of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
Following the recovery, a bomb disposal team was deployed to the site. On Sunday, the Bomb Squad successfully defused the explosive device, averting what could have been a major tragedy, officials confirmed.
The area had recently been flagged after intelligence inputs suggested that ULFA (I) operatives had infiltrated with plans to carry out terror and subversive acts.
Seven years ago, a similar IED was also recovered from the same location.
This comes at the heels of another successful operation on Thursday, when Assam Rifles recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from the dense Namdapha National Park in Changlang district — further underlining the heightened threat in the region.
Security has been beefed up across sensitive areas, with continuous surveillance and combing operations underway to thwart any potential threats in the lead-up to August 15.
